03. 등위형용사(Coordinate Adjectives)
같은 부류에 속한 형용사는 등위접속사 and, but, or, nor 등으로 연결하거나 또는 등위접속사 자리에 콤마(comma)를 사용해서 연결할 수 있다. 등위형용사는 피수식어인 명사에 귀속된 것이 아니므로 자리를 바꿔도 상관없다.
The pianist played a poignant and beautiful melody.
(그 피아니스트는 가슴 저미는 아름다운 멜로디를 연주했다.)
= The pianist played a poignant, beautiful melody.
= The pianist played a beautiful, poignant melody. <형용사 자리 바꿈>
[어휘] poignant 가슴 저미는
두 개 이상의 형용사가 나란히 배열되었을 때 등위관계인지 여부를 판단하는 방법으로 “and test”가 있다. 배열된 형용사의 위치를 서로 바꾸었을 때 의미의 변화가 없다면 형용사를 “and”로 연결할 수 있고 또한 and 대신에 콤마를 쓸 수도 있다.
The cold icy wind chilled me to my bones.
(차가운 바람이 뼛속까지 시렸다.)
형용사 cold와 icy는 각각 ‘The cold wind and the icy wind’ 의 의미이다. 우리말로 옮기면 “추운 바람 그리고 얼음같이 찬 바람”을 뜻한다. 편의상 ‘cold icy wind’는 ‘차가운 바람’으로 해석한다.
The icy cold wind로 형용사의 위치를 바꾸어도 의미의 변화가 없으므로 형용사 cold와 icy를 and 또는 콤마로 연결할 수 있다.
= The cold and icy wind chilled me to my bones.
→ cold와 icy 형용사가 각각 wind를 수식.
= The cold, icy wind chilled me to my bones.
→ 등위접속사 대신 콤마를 써서 형용사를 분리할 수 있다.
The cold December wind chilled me to my bones.
(차가운 12월의 바람이 뼛속까지 시렸다.)
‘The cold wind and the December wind’로 구분했을 때 “추운 바람 그리고 12월 바람”을 뜻하기 때문에 자연스럽지 않다. 형용사 cold는 wind를 수식하는 것이 아니라 복합명사 December wind를 수식하고 있기 때문에 and로 연결할 수도 없고 당연히 콤마로 분리해서 연결할 수도 없다.
등위형용사가
연속적으로 나열될 때 마지막 형용사 앞에 and를 사용한다. 그러나 나열된 등위형용사가 명사를 수식하는 경우 보통 and를 사용하지 않는다.
She is famous, attractive, and successful.
(그녀는 유명하고 매력적이며 성공적이다.)
She is a famous, attractive, successful singer.
(그녀는 유명하고 매력적이며 성공한 가수이다.)
and가 형용사를 강조하는 "very" 의 의미일 때
※ good and, lovely and, nice and, big and 등이 형용사 앞에 나오면 형용사 병렬구조가 아니라 and 뒤의 형용사를 강조하는 “very”의 의미를 갖는다.
He is a good and dependable person.
(그는 매우 믿을만한 사람이다.)

2. 정답 long and black hair or long, black hair
[해설]
and test를 적용해 본다. long and black or black and long 모두 가능하다.
[해석] 그녀는 긴 검은 머리를 가지고 있다.
3. 정답 some moldy cheddar cheese

and test를 적용해 본다. some and moldy or moldy and some 모두 어색하다. some과 moldy 형용사가 같은 범주에 속하는 형용사가 아니므로 and로 연결할 수가 없다. ‘hierarchical order’ 계층에 따른 어순이다.
[해석] 냉장고에서 일부 곰팡이가 핀 체다 치즈를 발견했다.
4. 정답 the world’s second fastest growing economy

[해설] and test를 적용해 본다. second and fastest and growing 각 형용사를 and로 연결했을 때 어색하다. ‘hierarchical order’ 계층에 따른 어순이다.

5. 정답 dented, abandoned vehicle or abandoned, dented vehicle
[해설] and test를 적용해 본다. dented and abandoned 뜻이 자연스럽다. and를 콤마로 대신할 수 있다.
[해석] 경찰은 사건 현장에서 찌그러진 채 버려진 차량을 발견했다.
[어휘] dented 찌그러진 abandoned 버려진
