비교급 (특수 표현)

1) 비교급 and 비교급 (점점 더 ~한)
It is getting hotter and hotter.
(날씨가 점점 더워지고 있다.)

The situation grew worse and worse.
(상황이 더욱 더 나빠졌다.)

2) not so much A as B: A라기 보다는 오히려 B이다

He is not so much a scholar as a novelist.
(그는 학자라기 보다는 오히려 소설가이다.)

= He is not a scholar so much as a novelist.
= He is a novelist rather than a scholar.

3) the same+N+as+N/S+V

Venus is roughly the same size as Earth.
(금성은 지구와 거의 같은 크기이다.)

How do you get the Yoda model the same size as he is in the films?

(당신은 어떻게 영화에서와 같은 크기의 요다 모형을 구입했습니까?)

4) S+be+different from+N

Football in the U.S. is different from that of other countries.
(미국에서의 축구는 다른 나라의 축구와는 다르다.)

5) B rather than A: A라기 보다는 오히려 B

rather 부사가 than과 짝꿍을 이루면 전치사 “instead of”의 의미와 같다. 등위접속사처럼 병렬구조를 취한다.

He is intelligent rather than irrational.
(그는 비이성적이기 보다는 지적이다.)

They were screaming rather than singing.
(그들은 노래하기 보다는 소리를 질렀다.)

= They were screaming instead of singing.

6) other than: ~외에, ~을 제외하고(except)

Editors are always free to consider ways of doing things other than what the rules specify.
(편집자들은 규칙이 명시하는 것 외에 일하는 방법들을 항상 고려할 수 있다.)

※ no/none 부정어와 부정을 뜻하는 “other than”를 결합하면 이중 부정(=강한 긍정)을 뜻하는 숙어가 만들어진다.

The history of the world is none other than the progress of the consciousness of freedom.
(세계의 역사는 다름 아닌 자유에 대한 의식의 발전에 있다.)
