부사절 축약(Reduction of Adverb Clauses)
부사절을 축약하면 분사구문이 된다. 부사절 축약은 두 가지로 나뉜다.
첫째 시간, 조건, 양보를 나타내는 부사절의 주어가 주절의 주어와 같고 동사가 be동사일 경우 부사절의 주어+be동사는 생략 가능하다.
둘째 after, before, when, while, since 등으로 시작되는 부사절의 경우, 동사가 be동사가 아닌 일반동사라 할지라도 부사절의 주어와 주절의 주어가 같다면, 주어는 생략하고 동사는 분사로 만들어 축약한다.
If √ heated, molecules move more rapidly. (√ they are 생략)
(만약 가열되면 분자는 더욱 빠르게 움직인다.)
He worked extremely hard though √ still poor in health. (√ he was 생략)
(여전히 건강이 좋지 않지만 그는 매우 열심히 일했다.)
The gorilla, while √ not as curious as the chimpanzee, shows more persistence and memory retention in solving a problem. (√ he is 생략)
(고릴라는, 침팬지만큼 호기심이 강하지는 않지만, 문제를 해결하는 데에 더 많은 끈기와 기억유지능력을 보여준다.)
When it is necessary, you can spend some of money. (it ≠ you)
= When √ necessary, you can spend some of money. (주절에 some of money 언급)
→ 주절에 간접적인 언급 대상이나 참조할 만한 것이 있을 때는 부사절의 주어가 주절의 주어와 달라도 축약 가능하다.
Since I put these into practice, I have had more energy and feel more alive.
(내가 이러한 것을 실행에 옮긴 이후 더욱 힘이 나고 활기를 느낀다.)
= Since putting these into practice, I have had more energy and feel more alive.
Before I left the house, I would check the appliances, lights and doors.

When it is compared 에서 (it is)가 생략된 부사절 축약이다. compare는 타동사로서 목적어를 취한다. 능동의 현재분사는 목적어를 취하므로 (B), (D)는 뒤에 목적어가 없으므로 틀렸다. (A)의 경우 동사원형으로 시작되는 명령문의 형태이다. (A) 또한 뒤에 목적어가 없을 뿐만 아니라 접속사 없이 콤마로 두 절을 연결하고 있으므로 틀렸다. 타동사 뒤에 전치사가 따르면 과거분사를 의미한다.
[해석] 지구의 크기와 비교할 때 대기는 상대적으로 얇은 가스 층이다.
