관계부사 생략
how를 제외한 when, where, why는 선행사와 관계부사를 함께 쓰거나 둘 중 하나를 생략할 수 있다. 관계부사절은 선행사를 생략할 경우, 구조상 명사절이 된다.
I’ll never forget the days when I worked together with you.
= I’ll never forget the days (when) I worked together with you.
= I’ll never forget (the days) when I worked together with you.
→ 선행사(the days)를 생략할 경우, when이하는 동사(forget)의 목적어인 명사절이 된다.
= I’ll never forget the days that I worked together with you.
→ when을 관계부사 that으로 대신할 수 있다.
Seoul is the place where I was born.
= Seoul is the place (where) I was born.
= Seoul is (the place) where I was born.
→ 선행사(the place)를 생략할 경우, where이하는 동사(is)의 보어인 명사절이 된다.
= Seoul is the place that I was born.
→ where를 관계부사 that으로 대신했다.
관계부사 vs. 관계대명사
관계부사 뒤에는 완전한 절이 나오는 반면, 관계대명사 뒤에는 주어나 목적어가 없는 불완전 절이 나온다.
This is the house which I lived two years ago. (x)
This is the house where I lived two years ago. (o)
= This is the house in which I lived two years ago.
Do you remember the day which you joined our club? (x)
Do you remember the day when you joined our club? (o)
= Do you remember the day on which you joined our club?
