04. 시간을 나타내는 전치사 (in/on/at)
in: 하루의 일부분, 월, 연도, 계절 등 긴 시간을 나타낸다.
in the morning/ in May/ in 2000/ in summer
on: 요일이나 특정한 날을 나타낸다.
on October 20 (10월 20일에), on the 20th of October (10월 20일에), on Sunday, on holiday (휴일에), on Thanksgiving Day (추수감사절에)
at: 정각, 정밀한 시간을 나타낸다.
at noon, at 2:00 p.m., at the beginning of the year (연초에), at the end of the year (연말에)
05. 장소를 나타내는 전치사 (in/on/at)
in: 도시, 주, 국가, 대륙 등 넓은 장소와 공간의 내부
in Canada, in Seoul, in a building, in a car
on: 길, 거리, 강, 호수 등 표면(surface)의 위, “타다” 라는 의미의 교통편
on the street, on Highway 35, on the Han River, on a bus
at: 정확한 위치, 도로나 교차로 지점, 주소
at home, at the office, at Ten Street Station, at the intersection, at the corner
06. 기간/시간 전치사
1. during/for/since
What will you do during the summer vacation? <during+특정기간>
He has worked here for ten years. <for+시간의 양>
He has studied English since 2000/ since he was 12. <since+과거시점>
→ ‘~이래로’ 의미의 since 뒤에는 과거의 특정 시점이 따른다. 주로 현재완료시제와 함께 쓰인다.
2. by vs. until
둘 다 ‘~까지’의 의미를 나타낸다. by는 동작이나 상태의 “완료”를 나타낸다. 반면에 until은 동작이나 상태의 “계속”을 나타낸다.
France would begin its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan next month and complete it by the end of the year.
(프랑스는 다음달 아프가니스탄에서 군대 철수를 시작해서 올 해 말까지 (철군을) 마무리 할 것이다.)
→ 완료를 나타내는 by는 주로 complete, finish, do, submit 등 동사와 짝꿍을 이룬다.
[어휘] troop withdrawal 철군
El Nino is under way and is likely to last until winter.
(엘니뇨 현상이 진행 중이라 겨울까지 지속될 것 같다.)
→ 계속을 나타내는 until은 주로 continue, stay, last, wait 등 동사와 짝꿍을 이룬다.
