기타 주의해야 할 동사
1. 광의(廣義)적 일반동사(Delexical Verb)
동작명사가 have, take, make, give 등 동사의 목적어로 올 때 동사는 일종의 허사로 동사 자체에는 아무런 의미를 지니지 않는다. 동사의 목적어인 명사를 동사로 해석한다.
After supper we had a quiet smoke.
(저녁식사 후 우리는 차분히 담배 한대를 피웠다.)
= After supper we smoked quietly.
had a quiet smoke를 ‘조용한 담배 한 대를 가졌다’로 해석하면 어색할 것이다. have, take, make 등 많은 뜻을 갖고 있는 광의적 일반동사가 동작명사와 짝꿍을 이루면 동사는 아무런 뜻을 가지지 않는다. 단지 동사자리에 형식적으로 쓰일 뿐이다. 국내의 많은 수험생들이 숙어로 외우고 있는 표현들이 실제 광의적 일반동사와 관련된 것들이다.
I got a good shaking up. (나는 대단히 혼란스러웠다.)
= I was shaken up thoroughly.
shaking 명사는 흔들림, 동요의 뜻이 있다. got a good shaking up을 ‘좋은 흔들림을 받았다’로 해석하면 이 또한 어색하다. 광의적 일반동사 get이 동작명사 shaking up과 짝꿍을 이루고 있으므로 get은 해석하지 않는다. 동작명사 shaking up을 동사로 해석하므로 명사를 수식하는 형용사 good은 부사로 해석한다.
Let me have a try. (제가 해 볼게요.)
= Let me try.
We paid a visit to the national cemetery. (우리는 국립묘지에 들렀다.)
= We visited the national cemetery.
Before he criticizes, he should make an attempt to discover the artist’s purpose.
(비난을 하기 전에, 그는 그 작가의 의도를 파악해야 한다.)
= Before he criticizes, he should attempt to discover the artist’s purpose.
