08. 부정사를 포함한 관용어구
1. enough to (~할 만큼 충분히 … 하다), so … as to (매우 …해서 …하다), so … that … can (아주 …해서 …할 수 있다)
His car is big enough to seat more than five people comfortably.
(그의 차는 다섯 사람 이상을 편안하게 태울 만큼 충분히 크다.)
= His car is so big as to seat more than five people comfortably.
= His car is so big that it can seat more than five people comfortably.
2. too … to / so … that … can’t
(아주 …해서 ~할 수 없다)
The meeting is too important for you to miss.
→ to miss의 목적어는 주어 the meeting과 같으므로 생략한다.
= The meeting is so important that you can’t miss.
(그 회의는 아주 중요해서 네가 놓칠 수 없다.
※ not too … to ~할 수 없을 만큼 …하지 않다
He is not too old to get married.
(그는 결혼을 할 수 없을 정도로 나이가 많지 않았다.)
= He is not so old that he can’t get married.
그는 나이가 너무 많지 않아서 결혼을 할 수 없다. (x)
→ 부정사와 짝꿍을 이루는 관용어구 앞에 not이 오면 해석은 뒤에서 거꾸로 한다.
3. in order to … / so as to … / so that ~ may[might] / …하기 위하여
You have to have some form of ambition in order to achieve your goals.
(목표를 달성하기 위해서는 당신은 어떤 형태로든 야망을 품어야 한다.)
= You have to have some form of ambition so as to achieve your goals.
= You have to have some form of ambition so that you might achieve your goals.
