as if / as though 가정법
Pattern
① S + V + as if + S + V
해석: 마치 ~인 것처럼 <주절과 같은 시제>
② S + V + as if + S + had p.p.
해석: 마치 ~였던 것처럼 <주절보다 먼저 일어난 시제>
→ 주절의 시제는 as if, as though 가정법의 시제보다 앞설 수 없다.
I remember the whole thing as if it happened yesterday.
(나는 마치 그것이 어제 일어난 것처럼 모든 것을 기억한다.)
= In fact/But it doesn’t happen yesterday. <직설법>
They talked as if they had got acquainted with each other for years.
(그들은 마치 수년간 서로 친분을 맺었던 것처럼 말했다.)
= In fact/But they didn’t get acquainted with each other for years. <직설법>
It sounds as if someone is knocking at the door.
(누군가가 문을 두드리는 것처럼 들린다.)
→ 화자는 누군가 진짜로 문을 두드리는 것으로 생각하고 있다는 것을 의미한다. as if/as though 다음에 사실을 말하는 경우, 직설법을 쓸 수도 있다.
Pierre Cardin is praised for his 20th century pieces that looked as though they were from the 25th century.
(피에르 가르뎅은 마치 (먼 훗날) 25세기에서 건너온 것처럼 보였던 그의 20세기 작품덕택에 칭송 받고 있다.)

※ as if / as though가 look,
sound, feel 등 동사와 함께
사용할 경우 ‘마치 ~처럼 보이다/들리다/느낌이 든다’는
의미로 쓰인다. 반면 구어체에서는 전치사 like가 as if / as though 대신 쓰인다.
